Fifty demonstrators trek from campus to downtown; some marchers fear for families' safety

It's not that summer is actually a restful time in campus politics. There are just fewer newspapers published, inexperienced students still figuring out their jobs and alliances, a dip in political theatrics.

This week Richard Lariviere will begin his new job as the University's 22nd president. It's a prestigious occupation in this state, with attendant monuments all over campus to prove it: former Presidents Johnson, Carson, Campbell, Erb and Straub all have buildings named after them.

In brief
The state House of Representatives passed an updated and much-debated K-12 school budget bill Thursday, granting all Oregon public K-12 schools a budget of $6 billion and putting an additional $200 million in a reserve account in case of further economic decline. While SB 5520 is good news for public schools, it has a less promising effect on the state institutions of higher education, including the University of Oregon.

Students get to class by car, bus, bike and longboard. A version of the traditional skateboard, longboards are used mainly for transportation and "cruising," as opposed to doing tricks or riding in skateparks. Not only are students at the University of Oregon using their longboards to get to class they are also building their own.

Making Electricity on Rec Center Elliptical Machines
Students at the Ecological Design Center proposed using elliptical machines to harness energy that can be fed back into the University's power grid. The Rec Center collaborated with the UO Sustainability Office and the Eugene Water Electric Board to retrofit 15 elliptical machines with ReCardio devices.
