It will be a few weeks before Sam Dotters-Katz takes office as the next ASUO president. In the meantime, he and vice president-elect Johnny Delashaw have been preparing for their term in office, starting with the hiring last Friday of current Senate President Athan Papailiou as their chief of staff.

Papailiou has been a senator for three years and ran for ASUO vice president last year. Dotters-Katz said Papailiou served as an adviser during the campaign after they were introduced by former Sen. Jacob Daniels.

Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Zionism misunderstood 6

Oregon Daily Emerald, University of Oregon, Eugene, OR

In today's political climate, you might think I am hesitant to admit I am a Zionist. The very word itself carries a heavy stigma. Still, after years of broken dialogue, incessant violence and determined defense, I am happy to say that today Israel turns 60, and despite how you might feel about my homeland, I am hopeful for the future of a dynamic and thriving Israel.

Housing debacle leaves UO, students stranded 4

Oregon Daily Emerald, University of Oregon, Eugene, OR

Good news: More soon-to-be college students are applying to the University than ever before. Bad news: The University has no idea where to put them all.

According to the University housing department, 3,600 students can be lodged in student housing each year. Technically speaking, the housing department guarantees a room to anyone who applies before March 31. Those who apply later are placed on a waiting list, and given a room if one becomes available.

Record freshman enrollment for the 2008-2009 academic year at the University has left University Housing scrambling to find space for incoming students to live. As in previous years, the housing department guarantees a room for all incoming students who apply for housing by the March 31 priority deadline; however, the unusually large freshman class seeking on-campus housing has left the University, which can comfortably house 3,600 students, dramatically overbooked, said Allen Gidley, interim housing director.

It's the phrase no one wants to read or hear. It signifies loss and remorse, pain and suffering. It might read like a fragment, but it's complete - with warm embraces from loved ones and strangers alike.

Sometimes it's the people you never know that affect you the most.

Letter from the Editor

After reading the "Ad-Hoc Committee on Free Press'" report I am left with an awful taste in my mouth. Not because I was proven wrong - if in fact, I am, then so be it, but in the manner in which the investigation and subsequent documents were handled - by university employees asked to self police, within house (but "independently," of course).

There is precious little space reserved in this issue of the Journal for what I think about "Schindler's List." I find myself up at night, wondering how my life will continue after seeing this film.

Have you ever had to cover your eyes because of something in a movie? Did someone comfort you by saying, "It's only a movie," and did you feel better? Regrettably, I had no such comfort, as the events in this film were true, and I felt obligated to watch it despite my disgust, pain and real tears.
