About Us
The Oregon Daily Emerald is published daily Monday through Friday during the school year by the Oregon Daily Emerald Publishing Co. Inc., at the University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon.
The Oregon Daily Emerald Publishing Company, Inc. (ODE) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, public benefit corporation operating on the campus of the University of Oregon. Publishing a campus newspaper since 1900, the ODE was incorporated in 1971, at which time it became independent of the University. Since that time, the ODE has fulfilled its mission "to provide education and training for University of Oregon students in all aspects of journalism through production of an independent student newspaper."
The Organization
Day-to-day operations of the ODE are managed jointly by the Publisher and a student Editor in Chief. The ODE is an equal opportunity employer committed to a culturally diverse workplace.
The Publisher is the chief operating officer and the chief financial officer of the corporation and is responsible for managing the administrative, business and fiscal affairs of the ODE, including a staff of non-student employees. In addition, the Publisher manages the Editor in Chief in matters affecting the corporation's finances. The Publisher reports to the Board of Directors.
The Editor in Chief, who is a student at the University, has responsibility for the student employees of the news department, which includes editors, reporters, freelance writers, photographers and other multimedia staff. The Editor is a corporate officer and reports to the Board of Directors.
Board of Directors
The governing body of the ODE is a volunteer Board of Directors numbering no less than 10 but not more than 12 members. Although the Board has ultimate responsibility for the management of the business and affairs of the corporation, the Board does not and should not engage in direct supervision of the day-to-day activities of the corporation. It is the function of the Board to develop overall policy for the corporation, and the job of the Editor and Publisher to implement those policies and to manage the Oregon Daily Emerald Publishing Company on a day-to-day basis.
Three members of the Board of Directors are employees of the ODE; they are elected annually by the staff members of the paper's technology & creative services, news and advertising/business departments. The representative of the newsroom may not be the Editor in Chief nor the Managing Editor.
Two Board members are faculty or staff employees of the University. They are appointed by the University President and each serve a two-year term of office.
Two Board members are University of Oregon students appointed by the Board to represent the general student body. These Board members each serve a two-year term.
Between three and five Community at-large members will be appointed to two-year terms.
