As No. 15 USC and No. 7 UCLA arrive in Eugene, this weekend will be important to the women’s volleyball team for numerous reasons. Obviously, the No. 18 Ducks could use a couple of wins after being swept in the Bay Area last weekend. Adding more significance to the two matches is that they will be the last two at home for the seniors. Full story

Birds of a feather flock together

Two games are left in this season. Just two games separate the No. 11 Oregon Ducks and the postseason — whatever that might bring.   The pressure is mounting for Oregon, and with a key battle on Saturday in Tucson with second place Arizona, it’s even harder for the team to ignore that this week is the latest, biggest game of the season.

Top-3 finishes ensure NCAA berths

In an increasingly rare circumstance, the Oregon men’s cross country team found themselves on the outside looking in — at least, temporarily. Pacific-10 Conference individual champion Chris Derrick of Stanford held court during the 10,000m men’s race to secure the individual win, and teammates Elliott Heath and Justin Marpole-Bird finished second and third, respectively, as the No.

Harry Marra, the former Team USA decathlon coach from 1990 to 2000, has been named assistant track and field coach for the Ducks, replacing Dan Steele.   “Harry Marra has been a leader within the combined event community and has guided athletes to success in the biggest meets in our sport for over 30 years,” Oregon associate athletic director Vin Lananna said in a media release.

Itching for action

With its first competition only weeks away, the newly formed Oregon women’s team stunts and gymnastics squad appears to be more than ready to show the University what they can do.   And now that head coach Felecia Mulkey — a true pioneer in the world of competitive cheer — has nearly a full roster to work with, the unknown future of team stunts and gymnastics looks brighter by the day.

Athlete of the Week: Andrew Vijarro

Andrew Vijarro has led the men’s golf team to top three finishes in each of its first three tournaments this year. The sophomore from Bend, Ore., has had two straight top-ten finishes individually, and tied for third at the MacKenzie Invitational in Fairfax, Calif.

Little ignites Oregon's early success

Adjusting to a new coach can be difficult, but the No. 32 women’s golf team has done so in stride as they have finished fifth, first and eighth respectively in their first three events. “I feel really good about (how we started the season),” senior Kate Hildahl said.

Senior leadership raises expectations

The Oregon men’s tennis team finally has the nucleus that has been missing in years past: senior leadership. With three four-year seniors in Alex Cornelissen, Marcos Verdasco and Ric Mortera, expectations are high for the team. “This is the first year that it’s been all my guys since I took over,” head coach Nils Schyllander said.

Rookie guards impress

Through the first 12 or so games of the 2009-2010 NBA season there has been an uprising of dominant rookie point guards, which has made me stop and appreciate some of the incredible things these young athletes have brought to the table, night in and night out.

Stoltenberg’s presence has Ducks optimistic for 2010

There is no question that the Oregon women’s soccer team came away from the 2009 season with a feeling of frustration and disappointment after dropping nine of their final 11 games to conclude the year. And after beginning the year in nothing short of dominant fashion, it’s no surprise that the Ducks will be looking to rebound in the offseason and return for a much-improved 2010 campaign.

Finally at home, Ducks preparing for next season

With the beeps and rumblings of construction all around them, the Oregon baseball team practiced this fall with a new sense of purpose. Finally home at PK Park and not at a high school field, the Ducks slowly worked on building a foundation for the 2010 season much like the construction crew was building a foundation for their new home.

The University’s club wakeboarding team qualified for the national finals on Saturday by virtue of its performance at the last qualifying tournament, which took place in San Diego. This is the first time the wakeboarding team has ever qualified for nationals, and the event will take place in Austin, Texas, from April 15 to 18.
